Who can call the University Ombuds Office (UOO)??
University students, administrators, faculty, staff, parents, or members of the public dealing with the University, can contact the director at 575-4831 regarding their student related concerns. You are encouraged to contact UOO before a situation reaches a formal stage of grievance.
Will UOO serve as an advocate for a student, faculty member, or any affected party in a conflict?
We cannot advocate for an individual's position, regardless of classification. We strive for fairness of process, and facilitate communication to help all parties reach mutually satisfactory agreements.
Are all conversations with UOO confidential?
Conversations with our office are considered confidential, and we will not disclose any part of your conversation without your permission. However, confidentiality cannot be promised in matters relating to discrimination, sexual harassment, retaliation, or relating to serious misconduct or crime, or if there is imminent risk of serious harm.
We do not keep identifying records. Any notes taken during the course of assisting with resolution of a conflict will be destroyed once a case is complete. We are not an office of record. Speaking to UOO does not constitute legal notice to the Unviersity that a problem exists, and if a matter becomes a formal grievance or legal action, you cannot request us to testify against, for, or in support of your position.
What about sexual harassment or discrimination?
We will listen to your concerns, and if the situation infers possible sexual harassment or discrimination, we will advise you that confidentiality cannot be promised. You will be encouraged to call the University's Affirmative Action office.
Who is the Program Director?
Sue Theiss, MA, is the Director and Ombud of the University Ombuds Office . She is a professional mediator who served as a University Ombudsperson at the University of Arizona for eight years before joining Student Affairs at the University of Arkansas.
What is an Ombud?
An ombud is a designated neutral or impartial dispute resolution practitioner who provides confidential and informal assistance to her/his constituents. Ombud offices operate independently, as a supplement to existing administrative or formal grievance procedures, and have no formal decision-making authority. They do not act as advocates for either side in a dispute.
What if the informal process does not work?
You are not precluded from pursuing formal remedies if informal approaches through UOO do not work. We can refer you to your formal options if necessary.
What is mediation?
Sometimes the most effective way to resolve a conflict is to bring two parties together, with a third party to facilitate an effective and productive discussion. Mediation is a process using a neutral party who is trained to facilitate the resolution of a conflict. Mediators assist in the clarification of issues and the generation of options for resolution. Mediators help parties reach their own agreement and do not make a decision regarding the outcome of a dispute. In order for mediation to be effective, parties must be willing to be active participants in the process.
